A Brief History of Postcards
The history of postcards can be traced as far back as 1861, when the first postcard was patented in the United States and sold to H.L. Lipman, who added decoration and design elements around the edges.

The US Post Office introduced the pre-printed penny postcard in 1873 and held a monopoly on the printing of postcards until 1898, when Congress passed the Private Mailing Card Act which allowed private publishers and printers to produce postcards..

The US Government still prohibited the use of the word “postcards” until the year 1901, when companies stopped labeling them as “souvenir cards” and “Private Mailing Cards.”
